I have a black and white version of this bamboo jersey top that I wear all the time. It's just so soft and it seems to go with everything. I think this one may make it into the regular rotation as well.

On a completely unrelated note, I took this shot on a hike down to our little creek. The ice is really dynamic this time of year, it never looks the same from day to day. These shards are several feet wide and look like lace and polka dots. What can I say, everywhere I look I see fabric! :)

A Report from Inside the Snow Globe

I love it when the snow flies especially when the flakes are huge and downy. The view from my living room makes me feel like I'm inside a snow globe. Ever wonder what the little people, in the little house, inside your snow globe were up to? Why making dresses, of course. Here's my report from the inside:)

This blue spiral lace over a cream lining reminds me of the intricate frost patterns forming out on my front step. That might be a nice reminiscence while wearing this on a hot summer day.

Everyone love a LBD. Why? It makes you look fabulous and put together with so little effort. It's the embodiment of no thought required, simple, savvy, sleek dressing. Here's my version the LBLD (little black lace dress).

I'm getting close to being ready for the full collection photo shoot. Can't wait to see these on the models!

Meet my studio companion, yes companion. Hey, we spend a lot of time together and she's definitely a good listener.

I thought I'd wheel her out in to the snow, rather than figuring out how to photoshop in a background, to give you a little taste of the of the dichotomy between the weather around me and the weather I'm designing for. It was a quick shoot and she didn't complain at all:)
Though I love the powder days, I'm definitely looking forward to the summer weather for the simple joys of wearing less than three layers at all times and sun kissed skin!

Spring is in the Air

Well, not really. We actually have some major winter storms heading this way but I wanted to give you a few peeks into the Spring 2012 Collection that I've been working on. For all of us northerners who survived those excruciatingly short days, I know you understand the importance of a vivid imagination. Here's to us and to the returning of the light, drawn out days and sun kissed skin!

I am loving this new little raindrop print skirt. It's great with a solid top.

Or perfect for mixing prints.

This "splatter" skirt is fun as a black and white ensemble.

Or to give the expression "that outfit looks painted on" a new meaning with a positive spin.

Pink and red is always a fun color combo in my book.

But I love pink and green too!

I'd better get back to sewing before the snow arrives because I'm planning on taking off a few powder days. Even if winter days are short, if they are a fluffy brilliant shade of white, then everything looks a little brighter. So hip hip hurray for all the little flakes! Ha, you know what I mean.

Oh, how I love Halloween!
As you may know, I love sew and design and am fortunate enough to get to do it every day, but as it is my job, I do still consider it work. Halloween, on the other hand, is my time to step in to the studio and just PLAY! I can make whatever my heart desires without any consideration other than what sounds fun. The bonus for this year's costume was my fabric buying expedition to LA earlier in month. Whenever I go on a buying trip there are always so many frivolous and beautiful things that catch my eye but have no place in my collection, for example iridescent black and green feathers. Who could resist? Usually me, but this time, yay, I had a use for them.

Art in the Pearl

Unfortunately, I didn't get too many photos from this last show and it's a shame because Art in the Pearl always has an eclectic mix of truly inspiring artists. Here are a few more of my favorite artists that I did mange to visit.

Amy Buettner and Tucker Glasow are brilliant. I LOVE their jewelry. It's so unique, funky and they use loads of vibrant colors. Look at this ring.

I think it needs to live on my finger.

Tuli Fisher makes hand crafted garden tools that make you want to get dirty:)

Rebecca Bashara and Scott Macdonald have a beautiful and serene aesthetic. I love how they use the natural shape and color of a simple river rock and make it shine as brightly as any gemstone.

I have a collection of these necklaces which I wear constantly and sometimes feature in my photo shoots. Oh, and Becca is modeling one of my designs from years ago:)

Art in the High Desert

I just got back from Art in the High Desert. It's a beautiful show in Bend, OR with an absolutely fabulous array of artists. Here are a few of my favorites.

I first met Liang Wei many years ago at one of my earlier art shows. I'm always impressed by the beautiful simplicity of his compositions. Check out some of his cool trees here.

Carla Fox is one of the masterminds behind this awesome show and she's an amazing metal smith to boot. Check out her work here.

Vicki Fish's booth was right across from me and I got to spend the entire weekend admiring her fun and funky mixed media creations. I have a feeling one will live in my house one day soon:) See them here.

Look at the brilliant colors that Gail Pendergrass achieves in her sculptural porcelain creations. I now have a new favorite mug that fits in my hand as if it were made just for me!

Whare Heke carves! These pendants are incredible. The detail and labor that goes into each piece is astonishing. Also, his lovely wife Ann was one of my favorite customers of the weekend. Every outfit she tried on looked stunning. I have a lovely new model:)

Julie Simpson weaves the most sculptural 3-D textiles that are truly unique and original. I have two of her scarves that I hang in my studio for inspiration. On top of that she also paints! Look at these groovy artworks.

Part of the joy of being a traveling artist is the friends you make and the community that you create. Ted Gaty is an official member of my artist community. He's a generous soul with a heart of gold.

My husband Chad is always talking about the inherent beauty in the grain of a board and wanting to haphazardly hang various pieces of wood on the wall. As you can imagine, he really loves how Ted's work takes that idea to the next level.

Jill Mayberg's playful paintings embody fun on canvas.

I wanted to share a few scenes from my weekend at the Bellevue Festival of the Arts.

It truly is a glamorous life. Here's our rockin' after hours nightlife scene. Yes, knitting and e-mail, party on!

Katy Lareau makes super fun, bright and whimsical glass creations. She also is an outstanding model and I get visitors to my booth all day who say "I saw this dress on Katy and she looked so fabulous I just had to come and try one on myself. "

I collect paintings of trees and loved these by Jennifer Phillips. She also paints miniatures for pendants. Very cool!

I loved the paintings by Lisa Lamoreaux. Her bumble bees want to see the world just like me:)

I will have one on my wall one day soon!

Lisa Telling Kattenbraker with her amazing batiks. Her work is really fun and quirky. I have one in my dining room and it always makes me smile:)

Michele Raney creates the most exquisite enamel jewelry I've ever encountered.

I also loved these paintings done on recycled doors, by muluk.

Here are Katie, Shannon and I, happy to be off of our feet and celebrating a successful weekend.

Cutie Cousin

My adorable cousin Heather came over from Iowa for a visit last week. I hadn't seen her for about 15 years and it was so great to meet again as adults. I've always thought she got lucky swimming out of our family gene pool with the tall/beautiful/smart genes and that she would make a fab model. So we threw together a quick impromptu photo shoot with a few new designs.

We took a road trip with my mom and my two aunts to see my other aunt and my grandmother in Helena. Here's my mom driving w/ her eyes closed and my aunt Helene looking frightened!

This is all of us together in Helena, MT. Thank you Grandma Grace for having such a crazy gaggle of daughters and grand daughters! And thank you to my mom and aunts for being such strong women and great inspirations. Love you!

Better Patterns

How lucky am I to have a wood shop at my disposal? Not to mention my own personal woodworker who's pretty sexy to boot. Stop me now before the funky background music starts up and we end up with "nympho in the wood shop". This post is not about an adult film people!! It's about Chad making a new and improved version of my most used and abused (oops, we're going there again) patterns.

Here's the sheet of 1/8" mdf we'll use. Chad can't help but smile for the camera:) He's embarrassed to be so dirty but spent the morning out felling trees to stock up the firewood stacks for next winter.

We traced my paper patterns on to the mdf then used 3 saws, count them, to get them down to size. First the table saw.

I'm trying really hard not to be distracting. I really love those hands.

Next comes the hand held circular saw.

And number three is the band saw.

Then the fine tuning is done on the edge sander.

We looked out the door at one point during the process and there was a giant (they all seem giant when you get a close up) moose looking in at us. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough on the draw to get a shot of him. I was actually working too, not just taking photos. Though, I do have to admit, I left during the final sand down and went for a bike ride. What can I say, it was a beautiful day and I'd been sitting inside at the sewing machine for far too long.

I haven't actually tried these patterns out so off I go to do so now.

Laverne and Shirley, Lucy and Ethel, every gal needs a pal. So I have to ask, can a girl have a sweet dress as a best friend? Because I think this one could fit the bill. Here are a few qualities that it shares in common with my favorite girlfriends. Unique (pussy willow polka dots), bright (cherry red), easy to be around (super soft cotton), smart (pockets), flexible (spandex), breezy (wide airy sleeves), and sassy (front zip). Yes, I think I have a new bestie. Time to introduce her to my other friends and take her out on the town.

Trunk shows are one of my absolute favorite ways to get my work out in the world.

Here are a few reasons why.

Beautiful women having fun playing dress up.

Seeing my clothes bring smiles and women happy in their bodies is inspiring and reminds me why I spend hours sitting at a sewing machine. Hearing feedback about how the clothes feel and fit really informs my design process.

Fights!!! over dresses!!!

I get to drink wine while working AND eat.

There's time for lounging and everyone gets to receive and offer opinions.

Even the babies have opinions.

As you can see trunk shows are also much more intimate than an art show and give me a chance to have a real conversations. After months of hermiting out in my studio that's a true delight:)

Thank you so much to everyone who came and added to the fun! You are what keeps me creating.

"Share" Top

This is one of my favorite new tops of the season. Wear it with your favorite skirt or to add some sparks to any outfit. Throw it on over a shocking pink bra and "share" a little glimpse of your "not so subtle" side.

What's the sassiest bra color that you own, or wish you could find, to show off with this top? I'm pretty boring/basic color wise but do have a cute lace and velvet number. I'd love to find one in a bright fuchsia though!

I'm about to embark on a studio revamp. I know you're probably thinking, "Oh but your space looks so very uhmmm, eclectic." but it's OK. You can just blurt out "What a sty". I won't be offended. After all I work in this little disaster zone. How do I ever get anything done? Here's how it works:

I work.
I make a huge mess.
I clean and organize my crap.
I work again and try to stay organized.
I make an even bigger mess.

My only excuse is that I don't really have places for all the things that need to be placed. And to add to that, I just bought another industrial machine that needs a place to live too.
Here's where my awesome husband Chad comes in. He is a master of organization and streamlining processes. He's also a furniture maker and can take all of my crazy imaginary conglomerations of nooks and crannies for this and that and channel them into real life shelves and carts. I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. As we were brainstorming fixes, I found myself gushing to Chad about how amazing he is, how lucky I am to have someone who can actually make these things happen, and on and on. I found out that gushing about him and his fabulous self (rather than myself) put a smile on his face and made him happier to do the project.

So stage one, the planning phase, is complete. I'll keep you posted.

Foodie Friday Falafel

Here's a shot of my lunch today which made me think I should do a foodie Friday. Food is most definitely one of my favorite creative outlets and a source of inspiration for me on many levels. Think; travel, parties, and if you finish this last skirt you can go eat that dark chocolate covered almond that's been serenading you with it's siren's song. OK, so it won't be 1 choco almond. I should add handful or box to that last statement.

This is one of my favorite recipes and is well loved and widely requested in my little foodie community. This makes about 30 patties depending on their size which is perfect for parties but you can reduce the recipe if you're feeding a smaller crew. I think they would also freeze well if you cook them first and then do an oven reheat. I haven't tested this theory though as they always tend to get gobbled down before any freezing is required.

Falafel

3 cups dried chickpeas
boiling water
1T lemon juice
3 cloves garlic
2 small onions or 1 1/2 large onions, quartered
1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne, or to taste
1 1/2 bunches fresh parsley with large stems removed
1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon lemon juice
grape seed oil for frying

1. Put the beans and the lemon juice in a large bowl and cover with boiling water, add a few extra inches of water as the beans will grow. Soak for 12 hours, drain and cover w/ boiling water again, soak another 12 hours.
2. Drain beans well and rinse. Add 1/3 of the parsley and 1 clove of garlic to a food processor. Process until well chopped and add 1/3 of each of the remaining ingredients (except oil). Pulse until minced but not pureed, scraping sides of the bowl if necessary. Repeat two more times w/ remaining 2/3rds of ingredients.
3. Put the oil in a medium, deep saucepan to a depth of at least 2 inches. Turn heat to medium-high and heat oil to about 350 degrees (a pinch of batter will sizzle immediately).
4. Shape batter into small patties. Fry in small batches, 5-8 patties (cooking too many at a time will cause the oil to cool to quickly and result in greasier patties). Fry until nicely browned, turn and repeat on other side. Remove w/ a slotted spoon and allow to drain on paper towel. Serve as an appetizer with warm pita, olives, sweet peppers, and cucumbers or in a salad.

These are great with a Tahini Sauce but I'm totally winging this recipe. I make it all the time and just throw things in the blender, without ever measuring, using the taste and add more technique to get it just where I want it. So here is a guess at quantities.

2/3 cup Tahini
juice of one lemon
2 cloves garlic
3 T tamari
1/4 c apple cider vinegar
1/4 c extra virgin olive oil
water

Throw it all in the blender and add water to achieve the desired consistency. If you need more guidance and/or a more reliable recipe you can find loads on google.

When I told the hubby that this design was called the waterfall top, he wanted to see a blue version. I aim to please, mostly, so here it is. More colors are on the cutting table. By the way this is a free form design so no two are exactly the same:) That's one of the beauties of handmade versus mass produced, each garment can be unique just like all of you!

Peek-a-boo Holes

Yes! More lace. You know you love it. Well, at least you know I love it because I keep slipping it into every collection in one form or another. Isn't this just a gorgeous one though? It's a Copenhagen Blue (yummy) and you can't see it all that well in the photos but it is over a soft gold/yellow lining which shows through the little peek-a-boo holes. Maybe that's why I love lace so much, with what other fabric can you use that sort of fun terminology.

I see this skirt as a fairly neutral piece, like a pair of faded jeans, but more interesting. That tells you a little bit about how I feel about jeans:) For those of you who don't know me well, I will reveal a shocking fact about myself. I don't own any, jeans that is. Crazy huh? The last time I wore jeans was when we were in the heavy construction phase of building our house. I must admit they do work well when your wielding a hammer and getting grungy. But as far as fashion goes, I've had a thing about them since I was in high school. Does anyone share my sentiment?

Are you just dying to see all these new designs on actual human bodies? I am! Don't fret the photo shoot is coming soon. Stay tuned.

It snowed last night and every thing is looking sparkly and beautiful but not particularly inviting for laying out a blanket. So, I'm thinking my little picnic fantasy will have to wait but that gives me plenty of time to plan what to put in the basket, mmmm.

Circle in Stripes

The great thing about a circle skirt is it's twirl factor. For six year old Melanie, of all the criteria involved in choosing a skirt, this was number one. I believe you're never too old too enjoy a good spin in front of the mirror or a little swish in your sashay and with this skirt you can get the twirl without the frill. That's the "goddess" top again which has me really wishing for warm weather because I want to wear it and I don't want to have to cover it with five warm layers. The belt, which was an anniversary present from Chad (isn't he sweet?) is from muse. I love the simplicity and ease of their designs:)

Here's the black version of the top I posted yesterday. When I put it on, the draped sheer mesh straps made me feel particularly lovely, I wouldn't necessarily say omnipotent, but I did get a bit of a Grecian goddess feeling.

If there were a Greek goddess of floral prints and lace what would her name be? Anyone? Floralacia?

YES) and we call it D and assign it a value of zero and we then add this freshly sewn outfit which is colorful (full of interest; lively and exciting? YES). Let's call it O, and give it a value of 10. We can then say that O > D and O + D = 10. Therefore, just by adding this outfit a gray day can become greater than it was and a perfect 10 too! Am I right? You can check my math but I'm feeling pretty secure about this equation. All that's left to do is put it on and see if it works.

It's a dull and dreary early spring day but I'm not letting it phase me. If you see me out on any given day I will probably be wearing jewelry by Shannon Miranda. She is one of my absolute favorite jewelry designers and a dear friend too. Her work has a distinct personality that makes it shine and draw attention from passersby. I always get so many compliments and inquiries when I wear one of her pieces. Her designs are so charming and truly unique just like Shannon herself.

Shannon also knows how to wear my designs like no other and when I do get the pleasure of seeing her it's likely she'll be donning an MGD original. She definitely works her signature style into every outfit, the shoes (I've seen her closet ladies and it is drool worthy), the accessories, the sass, she's got it all in spades. She always looks totally put together, fabulous and fashionable. When I need a muse Shannon often comes to mind, she's truly an inspiration.

Split wood/ ready runway

Today while preparing for my runway show this evening I had to take a scoop the ashes from the wood stove and split firewood to heat up the house break. I think it's pretty common for a designer to add this to their runway preparation regimen .
OK, so I didn't actually split the wood. It sounded good though. So maybe I just chose the small pieces from the pile to avoid heavy labor. I want you to know that I CAN split the crap out of a log if I have to, and have, but I can also dress some gorgeous women in some fun funky clothes with NO flannel included!

RAGS Wearable Art Show

Last weekend I participated in the RAGS wearable art sale. All of the participating artists donate 33% of their sales to to the RAGS guild which donates all of the proceeds to the YWCA’s domestic violence prevention and intervention programs. Last years show raised $87,000 which helped thousands of families and children. This is an amazing show put on by an extremely dedicated group of women.

I've been participating in the show for six (?) years now and am always thrilled to see who comes wearing my designs. When I arrived on Friday morning four of the artists and a few volunteers were modeling my wears and I was beaming. Here are a couple of photos of the charmingly beautiful, generous and industrious volunteers. Thank you ladies for making my day and for a great show!

I love this print so much that I had to make a skirt as well (see the dress in my earlier post). I think its the perfect outfit for a ride on a ferris wheel and would be well accessorized with a cone of lavender cotton candy. When I was a child, we would get to have cotton candy once a year when we went to the fair and I have clear memories of the anticipation and the thrilling feeling of that pretty spun sugar melting in my mouth. Mmmm, it wasn't so much the taste but the effect of sweet air was completely unique. Was that my first encounter with molecular gastronomy?

Not that I'll be riding any ferris wheels or eating any cotton candy anytime soon but this outfit is definitely going in my suitcase for the weekend. If you're in the Tacoma area this weekend hope to see you at the RAGS show.

34 Inches

Having 34 inches of snow on our mountain in the last 2 days is making my perception of the world around me shift. After a lovely morning of floating in a blizzard this print now looks like wings to me. Yesterday it looked 3-D but not ethereal. So from this I'm concluding that snowboarding is good for the soul and the imagination. Oh and the wardrobe!

Negative Temperatures + Little Yellow Birds = Sunny Dresses

When I started working this morning it was below zero and the inside of my house didn't feel much warmer. Though it was really hard to get out from under the warm covers with indoor temps hovering around 48 degrees, when I did I was rewarded with the sight of the sweetest little yellow birds flitting from branch to branch in the pine trees outside my window. They were so small that at first I thought they were butterflies. So today in honor of all industrious creatures who endure crazy cold I too am hard at work.

Spring Soiree

Who's ready for spring? I must admit I'm not quite ready yet as I've been snowboarding this week on some of the best snow of the year but I am still managing to create for spring and this dress makes me feel like a spring soiree is just around the corner. Doesn't this print remind you of confetti or petals falling from cherry blossoms?

This is one of my all time favorite cuts. It's super flattering (Can you say hourglass?) and every time I throw it on I feel put together and fabulous. I already have two of these and I think I may have to find a home for this version in my closet as well. It's speaking to me and I love the color combinations.

I just got back from a last minute weekend getaway to Portland with Chad to celebrate our anniversary, 12 years on the 12th :) We went to see art, take in a show, visit friends and EAT! Next time you're in PDX I recommend Veritable Quandary, granted we were famished when we rolled in at 10 pm on Thursday (they serve food until 2 am) and started the meal off with a fabulous martini but I am ranking it as one of my best meals in recent history. The Portland art museum is awesome! I need several more days there though. Also, check out the Museum of Contemporary Craft, it's small but really worth the visit.

So now I'm back in the studio feeling inspired to make found object sculpture, handmade books and to cook. How will I transform all of this inspiration into some wearable art?

Here's a new design I'm working on for spring. I can't decide which version I like best. I'm having fun playing with the piping detail and love the retro feel of it but I am also drawn to the simplicity of the single panel in this floral.

This is my new haphazard top and the window in my studio looking out at the sunny sky:) I wore this to a dinner party this weekend to rave reviews.
